First Capoeira Class: What to Expect

Everything you need to walk into your first Capoeira class in Las Vegas relaxed, ready, and pumped - from what to wear to what actually happens during the hour.

3 min read

Before class

  • Show up 10 minutes early to sign in and meet an instructor.
  • Wear leggings or shorts, a t-shirt, and no shoes on the training floor.
  • Bring water. You'll need it.
  • Eat light 1–2 hours out. Empty tanks and full ones both slow you down.

The class flow

  1. Warm-up - mobility, movement games, some cardio.
  2. Ginga & basics - the base step every movement flows from.
  3. Technique - kicks, escapes, drills with a partner.
  4. Music - a look at the instruments and how the songs work.
  5. Roda - the class forms a circle, two people play, everyone else claps and sings.

What'll be easy, what'll be hard

Easy: being welcomed, learning the ginga, feeling the music. Every single person in the class started where you're starting.
Hard: coordinating hands and feet, remembering names of movements, singing along in Portuguese. All of that shows up naturally over the first month.

After class

Expect to sleep well. Expect a couple of muscles you didn't know you had. Expect to want to come back - that's the roda pulling you back in.

FAQ

Common Questions

Do I need any experience?+

No. Beginner classes are structured for total first-timers. You'll learn the ginga (the base step), a couple of kicks, and how the class flows.

What should I wear?+

Comfortable athletic clothes - leggings or shorts, a t-shirt, and no shoes on the training floor. If you continue, we'll get you into a traditional white uniform (abadá).

Should I eat before class?+

Light meal a couple of hours before, or a snack 30–45 minutes out. Capoeira gets physical - don't roll in on an empty tank or a full one.

How fit do I need to be?+

Any level. Movements scale up or down. The class is designed so a first-timer and a five-year student can both get a great workout side by side.

Will I have to sing or play instruments?+

Eventually, yes - that's part of what makes Capoeira different. On day one, you can just watch and listen. It becomes fun fast.

Do I play someone in the roda my first class?+

Only if you want to. Most students watch the roda for a couple of classes, then join at a beginner tempo when they're ready.
